I know that I have intimately felt the truth behind each of the ways in which Anthony Beal describes food in this quote. At different times in my life — on a daily basis even — food means each of these different things to me. Yet, the idea of food as “art and magic” is what keeps me coming back to the kitchen time and time again — the ability to take simple ingredients and to combine them in such a way that they become something so much more.
